TheAwayTeam ‘Star Kinship’

[Release page] Italian sound and video artist (as AAVV) Paul Kersex dedicates his album to the hitherto “uncontacted tribes of African Atlantis.” Having made empathic connection on his own, possibly by reading the constellations according to some long-forgotten esoteric tradition, TheAwayTeam expresses its kinship via a similarly esoteric set of pieces that is part space-age exotica and part My Life in the Bush of Ghosts – the record from 1981 and the 1954 book by Amos Tutuola as well, in its evocation of imaginary Africa.

There are no voices snatched from airwaves and obscure vinyl like on Eno & Byrne’s milestone, but plenty of avian and mammal chatter, including an electronic elephant trumpeting through “Caravan.” Each eccentric track orbits round restrained but spirited hand percussion – which adds an extra layer of warmth – and one locomotive, strangely enough on a track called “Zambesi Falls.” “Twilight: Drums in the Forest,” on the other hand, is absolutely true to its name, dancing in the dying light as the cool evening air dries the day’s sweat on the brow.

1. You’re also working as Polysick and the video project AAVV. Could you please talk about the each project?

I chose the name “Polysick” a couple of years ago when my Korg Polysix suddenly started to behave erratically and then died. At that time I was recording the tracks that would be later released on “Meteo”, mostly “mild acid” tunes composed with the classic “acid house” Roland equipment, slightly lo-fi with a retro/VHS vibe. Later it seemed natural to use another name (TheAwayTeam) for the drone/newage stuff that was (at least on the first record) completely beat-less, and built around a different, almost “spiritual” concept. As for AAVV: in the beginning it was just an elusive brand (“aavv” is the italian acronym for “various artists”) I invented to refer to the video experiments I made for my own music, then I started to make videos for other artists too and the thing evolved until the creation of a sort of “video label” to release other people’s works.

2. Polysick’s debut album “Meteo” was released on Legowelt’s Strange Life Records. How did you link up with him and release there?

Of course I knew the name Legowelt before, but I decided to send him a demo when I heard “The Psychic Stewardess”. I was really impressed by that record, also because I was revolving around a similar musical and visual concept when it came out. So I sent him a link to a video I had made for one of my tracks (Smudge Hawaii) and he liked it. The very next day he asked me to send more stuff for a release. I have to say everything went really quick and flawless.

3. The new album “Star Kinship” is highly anticipated album since “Evacuate Planet Earth” (split with Panabrite) and “Relax & Sleep” DVD-r. But the sound style was getting a bit different, I’d like to know what was having changed your mind and getting an inspiration from, also the concept of the album?

I’m constantly recording new music and listening to different genres and sounds, so I’m easily influenced by new ideas. I didn’t want to make another drone-ambient album because I got a bit tired of that kind of motion-less, all synthesized sound. “Relax&Sleep” was conceived as a video-hypnosis tutorial divided in 5 cycles/chapters, and the music was already different from “Evacuate”, incorporating many deep house/ quasi-techno elements (though in a raw and lo-fi vein). The main idea behind “Star Kinship” was to fuse a primitive,”ancient” element – percussion, rattles, field recordings – with a “retro-future” one, represented by quasi-digital synth pads, sequenced patterns and analogue effects. Steve Roach’s “tribal ambient” albums and vintage “weird exotica” libraries (like Umiliani’s “Polinesia”) have been a strong influence on this record, but I think the overall sound has a 90′s/chillout flavor, and there are even free-jazz and house elements in a couple of tracks (Theo Parrish is my favorite listen at the moment).

4. What instruments/machines were you using for this album? Also are you doing a live performance to use lots of analogue synths?

My current setup is made of a bunch of analogue synths triggered by drum machines. A prominent element in this album is the Elka Synthex and its 4tracks sequencer, while many of the tribal drum sounds are filtered Jomox and Roland TR626 voices. I’m not doing live perfomances at the moment, but I might consider doing some in the future. It would be hard to bring all the gear with me so it would probably be a visual set with some improvising going on.

5. Are there any upcoming releases for each project?

Next is a Polysick 7″ on BigLove, “Nightwalk”, that should be out in a couple of months. I have been recording new tracks for some months now, so other releases are planned but nothing is yet defined.

6. Please let me know about the impression of JAPAN and give a message to Japanese.

Well, I really love Japan. Btw most of my favorite music wouldn’t exist without the talent and creativity of the Japanese people, like those who created Roland and Korg. For example, invented unique instruments like TB303 and TR909 (thanks to Tadao Kikumoto!!!) So my message is simply “thank you”.

Interview : Nature Bliss

─ あなたはTheAwayTeam名義以外でも、Polysickや映像チームAAVVの一員として活動されていますが、それぞれのプロジェクトについて説明していただけますか？

2、3年前に愛用のKorg Polysixが突然、誤作動を起こして故障してしまったのだけど、その時に”Polysick”の名前を選んだんだ。そのころ、のちに「Meteo」として リリースされるトラックも制作しているのだけど、そのほとんどはRolandの機材から生み出されるようなクラシック「アシッドハウス」に、レトロなVHSヴァイブを取り入れた、ちょっとローファイ・テイストの「マイルドアシッド」チューンだったね。次いで「スピリチュアル」なコンセプトのもと、多様な要素を盛り込み、完全にビートレス（少なくとも初期作品は）な、ドローン/ニューエイジ系の作品を制作するために「TheAwayTeam」という名義を使う流れになった。
私が制作した音楽に、映像を組み合わせるという試みで始めた”AAVV”は、最初のころはなかなかブランドとして成立しなかった(“aavv”はイタリア語の頭字語で”various artists”を示すためのもの)けど、さまざまなアーティストのPVの制作を手掛け、他のアーティストの作品をリリースしながら、「ビデオレーベル」として発展していったよ。

─ Polysickのデビューアルバム「Meteo」は、LegoweltのStrange Life Recordsから発売されましたが、どういう経緯でリリースされることになったのですか？

もちろんLegoweltの名前は前から知っていたけど、彼にデモを送るきっかけとなったのは、”The Psychic Stewardess”(Legoweltの変名である実験的シンセプロジェクト)を聴いてからだよ。ちょうどそのころ、似たような音楽を制作していて映像と組み合わせるスタイルにハマっていたか ら、その作品にすごく興奮したんだ。彼に制作した一曲である「Smudge Hawaii」(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9G7ryrcEsU)の映像リンクを送ったところ、すごく気に入ってくれた。すぐその翌日にリリースの話をもらって、ほかの曲も送ってほしいと頼まれたんだ。万事これ以上ないってほど、完璧な運だね。

─ 「Evacuate Planet Earth」 (Panabriteとのスプリットリリース)、「Relax & Sleep」 DVD-Rに続く、待望の新作アルバム「Star Kinship」が発売されますね。サウンドスタイルの変化を感じましたが、心境の変化や何かからインスピレーションを得たのですか？またアルバムコンセプトもあれば教えてください。

常に新曲を制作するときは、違うジャンルのサウンドを聴いているので、新しいアイディアから影響されやすいね。あと、全部シンセで完成されるような静的ドローン/アンビエントな作品には少し疲れてしまったから、同じような作品はもう作りたくなかったんだ。「Relax & Sleep」は催眠療法な映像を5章に分けて収録しているけど、使われている音楽はすでにその前の「Evacuate Planet Earth」とは違っていて、ディープハウス/ポストテクノ要素(荒削りでローファイ風であるけど)を組み入れている。

「Star Kinship」のメインアイディアは、プリミティヴの融合で、パーカッション、小物楽器、フィールドレコーディングの「古代的」要素と、デジタルシンセ パッド、シーケンスパターン、アナログエフェクトにより形成される「レトロフューチャー」感を調和させたかった。

とくにSteve Roachのアルバム「tribal ambient」や、ヴィンテージの「weird exotica」ライブラリーミュージック(Umiliani「Polinesia」など)は、制作中に強い影響を与えてくれた。全体的に90年代風なチルアウト路線だけど、フリージャズや数曲はハウス的要素も兼ね備えている(Theo Parrishは今一番のフェイバリットだよ)。

─ では、このアルバムではどのような楽器、機材を使用されましたか？またライヴではたくさんのアナログシンセなどを持ち込むのですか？

何台ものアナログシンセとトリガーを設定したドラムマシンが、現在のセットだよ。中でもアルバムで大活躍だったのは、Elka Synthexと内蔵の4トラックシーケンサーで、多くのトライバルドラムサウンドはJomoxのフィルターとRoland TR626のリズムで組み立てている。ライブは今のところまったくやらないんだけど、将来的には考えるかもね。全部の機材を持ち運ぶのは大変だろうから、 即興的なヴィジュアルセットになるんじゃないかな。

─ それぞれのプロジェクトの今後のリリースについて聞かせてもらえますか？

Polysickの7インチ「Nightwalk」がBigLoveから2、3ヶ月以内に発売されるはずだよ。ここ数ヶ月の間、新曲を制作中だけど、ほかのリリースは未定だね。

─ では、最後に日本への印象とメッセージをお願いします。

えーと、私は本当に日本が好きなんだ。だって私の好きな音楽はRolandやKorgの日本人開発者なしでは存在し得なかったわけだし。たとえばTB303、TR909のようなユニークな機材の発明(菊本忠男氏のおかげだね!!!)。
だから、私のメッセージはシンプルに「ありがとう」だよ。
